The man arrested after the multiple-vehicle fatal crash on the N12 East near Alberton on the East Rand has previous convictions, the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court was told on Thursday.

Among his convictions was one of culpable homicide, prosecutor John Ntuli told the court.

According to the charge sheet, he faces four counts of culpable homicide and a single charge of reckless driving related to Tuesday's crash.

This was after his truck ploughed into about 47 vehicles in early morning traffic on Tuesday, killing four people and injuring 16 others.

It was reported that he claimed his brakes had failed.
