Newborn baby found alive in taxi rank toilet

A newborn baby was found alive in a toilet at a taxi rank in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday morning, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann said people in the area found the baby at the toilets opposite the High Court in Pietermaritzburg.

Paramedics who were summoned removed the baby girl and after assessing her and clothing her found that she was in a stable condition.

Steinmann said the baby was estimated to be a few hours old.

She was taken to a hospital.

"Baby is doing well," she said.

Police would take over with an investigation into where her mother is and the circumstances of her being left in the toilet.
