It's very difficult to keep track of news amongst hundreds of headlines a day. So we will pick out the top 5 trending news a week in highlights for you to follow.

1. The Ice Bucket challenge:

The Ice Bucket challenge has gone beyond viral. It has now taken over the internet world. The challenge started in the US, with the aim of raising funds for people suffering with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis —also referred to as motor neurone disease, and, in the United States, Lou Gehrig's disease). South Africans are now involved in the challenge. The Springboks, Joost van der Westhuizen and other rugby teams took on the the icebucket challenge.

 

Sadly, the co-founder of the Ice bucket Challenge had drowned in an accident. READ MORE

2. The Gupta family receive diplomatic passports in Lesotho

The Prime Minister of Lesotho Thomas Thabane has defended his decision to issue members of the Gupta family with diplomatic passports and rejected opposition demands to withdraw them. READ MORE

3. The story of James Foley

 

James Foley, a US journalist was allegedly beheaded by Islamic extremists. A YouTube video went viral last week showing James Foley on his knees with an Islamic man named 'John' standing behind him,  ready to behead the journalist. The screen went black at the moment of 'beheading' which  has led to some doubting that such took place. Some believe that this actually happened. James Foley's parent who had watched the video says that they are ready to forgive the man who killed their son. The authenticity of the video is being investigated by the US - and the search for 'John' continues. READ MORE

Meanwhile, another US hostage was freed after being held in Syria for two years.

Curtis was handed over to United Nations peacekeepers in the village of Al Rafid, Quneitra, in the Golan Heights and, after undergoing a medical checkup, was transferred to US representatives, the UN said. READ MORE

A video showing a young boy who miraculously survived being run over by an SUV has gone viral.
