Egyptian court gives Morsi's son one year in prison for drug use

An Egyptian court Wednesday sentenced the son of deposed Islamist president Mohammed Morsi to one year in prison on drug charges. The court, held in Benha north of Cairo, also fined Abdullah - Morsi's youngest son - 10,000 Egyptian pounds (around 1,428 dollars).

In March, Abdullah was detained with a friend for allegedly possessing cigarettes stuffed with drugs. The drugs were found when their car was stopped at a police checkpoint.

The co-defendant was Wednesday handed down the same sentencing and fine. The court said it showed clemency in the verdict because both convicts are still university students.

The ruling can be appealed. Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, was toppled by the army in July 2013 following massive street protests against his one-year rule.
