The man convicted of killing honeymoon tourist Anni Dewani was admitted to hospital, the Western Cape Department of Correctional Services said on Sunday.
Spokesman Simphiwe Xako said Xolile Mngeni was admitted to the Groote Schuur hospital in Cape Town on Tuesday, but he said he was unable to comment on his condition.
However, Eye Witness News reported that Mngeni was in a critical condition, after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2011.
The Western Cape High Court jailed Xolile Mngeni for life in 2012 for killing Dewani.
He was also sentenced to 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and to five years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, to run concurrently with his life term.
Dewani, 28, was shot dead in Gugulethu on November 13, 2010, in an apparent faked hijacking. Her body was found the next day.
Her husband Shrien, was extradited to South Africa in April to face charges related to her murder.
