The Presidency had confirmed that former President Nelson Mandela has been discharged from the Pretoria hospital where he had been receiving treatment.
This comes after the Presidency denying the international reports of Madiba being released yesterday, 31 August 2013 - saying that the story about his discharge was not true - and that he only left the Pretoria Hospital today.
Madiba's condition remains critical and is at times unstable. His team of doctors are convinced that he will receive the same level of intensive care at his Houghton home that he received in Pretoria. His home has been reconfigured to allow him to receive intensive care there. The health care personnel providing care at his home are the very same who provided care to him in hospital. If there are health conditions that warrant another admission to hospital in future, this will be done, says the Presidency.
During his stay in hospital from the 8th of June 2013, the condition of our former President vacillated between serious to critical and at times unstable. He has received full medical support and continues to do so. He has also received visits from family, friends and colleagues. Despite the difficulties imposed by his various illnesses, he, as always, displays immense grace and fortitude.
Madiba has been treated by a large medical team from the military, academia, private sector and other public health spheres. We thank all the health professionals at the hospital for their dedication. Most media have also been notably responsible and we thank them also for the maturity and understanding that all have in general displayed.
We now call on all to allow the former President and his family the necessary private space so that his continuing care can proceed with dignity and without unnecessary intrusion, The presidency added.
MANDELA'S NEARLY THREE-MONTH HOSPITAL STAY
The main developments since 95-year-old South African anti-apartheid hero and former president Nelson Mandela was admitted to hospital on June 8 until his discharge on Sunday:
--JUNE, 2013--
- 8: Mandela is readmitted to hospital with a renewed lung infection and is in a "serious but stable condition", the presidency says.

- 25: Close family of Mandela gather at his rural homestead in Qunu.
- 26: Mandela is on life support, an elder in Mandela's clan, Napilisi Mandela, says.
President Zuma cancels a trip to Mozambique.
UN leader Ban Ki-moon says that the whole world is praying for Mandela, "one of the giants of the 20th century".
Court documents filed that evening claim Mandela is in a "vegetative state" and that Mandela's doctors advised his family to turn off his life support machine, citing his perilous health.
- 27: There is relief as Zuma says that the condition of Mandela had improved overnight. He remains critical but stable.
His daughter Makaziwe Mandela says his condition is "very critical" and "anything is imminent".
