I think I have to install one. JMPD installs cameras on downhills at places where no accident has ever occurred. There this is a purely revenue raising exercise so I won't have a problem "defeating the ends of justice.

Anyway you can look at the alternative device. It just warns you that radar equipment is being used in the area. This might not constitute a crime.

@Lungu

If you stuck to the speed limit/s and obeyed the rules of the road, you'll surely enjoy your driving :-).

An exercise in futility if you ask me, you are bound to be stopped and arrested for having a jammer installed even when you are not driving faster than the limit. It's not like JMPD Officers can't see your speed is not registering.

Rather use an App that alerts you of the speed limit, whether you are travelling faster than the limit and if there is a speed camera around or if a JMPD officer and / or roadblock has been spotted.

Try an App like Trapster or Wase, Wase is better because it is interactive and you can see messages from other users. In December I drove to Durban with Trapster on all the way and it kept me abreast with those sneaky speed cameras especially approaching tollgates where the speed drops suddenly and there is a camera to trap you even before you've had the chance to drop your speed.

Dzel, just two questions from a tenchnologically challenged person. The people updating these reports you read, are they using a cellphone/laptop/other device while driving? And are you reading it while driving?

Pleasure, just to give you just how good Waze is, Apple is said to be interested in buying it and have it as their standard map application to replace Google Maps (a consequence of the Apple vs. Google / Samsung war).

Like I said it is interactive you have different user groups PigSpotter being one of these groups, there is another called Waze Johannesburg. You can make yourself visible so other users can see where you are, you can tag yourself in case you need someone to follow you to your location, it has navigation capability, you can report traps, roadblocks, accidents, etc; it really is an amazing App.

@Dzel,

Seeing that you drove down to KZN, I hope that you were sticking to the speed limits coz these speed over distance cameras are not a joke :-).

I once drove down to KZN when they first introduced this speed over distance thing. I had my car locked at 120km/h throughout the journey.

A week later I was surprised to receive a love letter from the Mpofana Traffic department "Mooi River" saying that I was on average travelling at 120km/h on a 100km/h zone and have to pay them R750.00.

The speed in the zone that they are talking about was reduced from 120km/h to a 100km/h zone. Yes it was my fault that I didn't pay attention to the signage :-).

Primarily it use GPS and the info is sent to a repository so it combines info from all the users to calculate average speeds so when traffic in a 100 km/h zone is travelling at 60 km/h then obviously there is an issue the first suspect being traffic congestion. Then someone will update that there is an accident so you know know what the cause is similarly is there is a road, etc, etc.

I use an Android phone with a touch enabled interface - Samsung - when I get into the car I put it on the craddle so it is easy to read and updating anything takes a few touches (never more than three touches) so it is practical and easy to use without endangering myself or other road users as the craddle is fixed to my windscreen.

In fact I use my phone for most things in the car like playing music, navigation, just about anything you can think of. I am crazy about Android because it is probably the best thing to have happened to mobile phones after the phone camera changed the way we use our phones.

You don't even need a phone with a GPS since you can still use location triangulation but that is not as accurate but it still gets the job done.

Actually I was driving conservatively and trying to keep to the speed limit as possible but the kind of tickets I get are like travelling at 111 km/h in a 100 km/h - 60 km/h zones is where they really nail me - so over a distance my average speed is not too far off from the limit.

There was a time when 150 km/h would have been my average speed but with age you learn to relax a little.

Thye sell that nonsense in most car parts shops, inclduing Autostylem its basically a laser which relfects back and prevent the speed camera from detecting the speed.........I always wondered if that was legal.....but then a gain, its a good thing as those bastard.s can speed as they want and end up killing innocent people, 1300 and counting is no joke.

Poor reporting. its not possible to jam speed. It is a speed trap jammer or speed reading device jammer.

I see it has been poorly reported in all news publications.
