'KZN mayor, deputy had 16 guards'

Two of Bhamjee's bodyguards -- Thulasizwe Mbanjwa and Sthembiso Mokoena -- are alleged to have opened fire on a motorist on the N3 two weeks ago as they were escorting Bhamjee.

A KwaZulu-Natal mayor and his deputy have had 16 bodyguards assigned to them since 2008 at a cost of more than R1.2 million a year, the Sunday Tribune reported on Sunday.

According to the newspaper, Umgungundlovu district mayor Yusuf Bhamjee and his deputy Thandiwe "Fucwana" Zungu have more bodyguards than provincial premier Senzo Mchunu, who has only five bodyguards.

Umgungundlovu district encompasses Pietermaritzburg, Howick, Mpendle and Richmond.

Two of Bhamjee's bodyguards -- Thulasizwe Mbanjwa and Sthembiso Mokoena -- are alleged to have opened fire on a motorist on the N3 two weeks ago as they were escorting Bhamjee.

They appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court last week on charges of attempted murder.

The Mercury reported on Friday that Mbanjwa had failed to disclose to the court that he had a previous conviction for attempted murder.
