Four people have taken the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) to the High Court in Pretoria over alleged malpractice by a Benoni plastic surgeon, The Star reported on Thursday.
Four patients of Dr Luke Gordon want the HPCSA to take strong action against him after their allegedly botched operations.
They claim the HPCSA allowed him to continue practising despite a string of complaints. Gordon previously received fines and suspended sentences for medical malpractice from the council.
One of the complainants lost a leg when Gordon performed a calf implant operation and two others had elective breast reduction surgery which left them disfigured, it was reported.
In court papers the four argue that if stronger action had been taken against Gordon, at least one of them could have been spared from disfigurement and pain.
"The HPCSA is entrusted with the statutory duty to protect the public by conducting investigations into complaints lodged against practitioners under their jurisdiction, and they are empowered to act against them," the court document reads.
Gordon paid R4.5 million to clients in the last three years. The HPCSA found him guilty after complaints in 2000, 2007 and 2008.
Gordon told the paper he was unaware that his patients had instituted legal proceedings.
