Girl killed in beer ceremony

Anelisiwe Saul had reportedly been playing on the back of a bakkie with other children during a traditional beer ritual in Khayelitsha on Sunday night.

A five-year-old girl died in an accident during a beer ceremony in Cape Town, the Daily Voice reported on Tuesday.

Anelisiwe Saul had reportedly been playing on the back of a bakkie with other children during a traditional beer ritual in Khayelitsha on Sunday night.

Her mother Neliswa Saul told the newspaper the driver, who had taken part in the ritual, decided to drive to his brother's home with the children still on the back.

"And for some reason he reversed over a speed hump and that's when Anelisiwe fell out. He backed up again and hit her on the head as she tried to get out from underneath the van," Saul was quoted as saying.

The girl died on the scene.

Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed to the newspaper that the man was arrested and charged with culpable homicide.
