KZN unions threaten action

Four trade unions threatened on Thursday to bring the KwaZulu-Natal agriculture and environmental affairs department to a standstill.

They accused it of bullying and using unfair labour practices.

The threat came from the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu), the Health and Other Service Personnel Trade Union of SA (Hospersa), the Public Servants' Association (PSA), and the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (Nupsaw).

They told reporters in Durban they had handed a letter to KwaZulu-Natal premier Zweli Mkhize demanding that their complaints be addressed.

The unions claimed KwaZulu-Natal agriculture and environmental affairs MEC Meshak Radebe had interfered with staff, their appointment, or moved them out of their respective departments without consultation.

Nehawu provincial chairman Thobile Nkosi said a number of people had been moved out of the supply chain management section without consultation, and had been replaced for no reason.

She called for Radebe's resignation.

"A looming strike or plan of action" would be inevitable if Mkhize did not respond to their demands, the unions said.

They also demanded that contract workers be absorbed into the department, and that the practice of appointing staff to acting positions be stopped.
