"HIGH Blood Pressure is a silent killer and often people neglect the symptoms," says Professor Phindile Mntla of Dr George Mukhari Hospital.

Addressing the Mfuyaneni Methodist Church and community members in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday, Mntla served his 67 minutes for Mandela Day at the Young Men's Guild (YMG) annual health and wellness day programme.

This year YMG decided to spend it with disadvantaged communities around Mfuyaneni section.

Mntla spoke about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how one needs to look out for symptoms of high blood pressure.

"High blood pressure is a common disorder in which blood pressure remains abnormally high.

"It's important that people should go for regular checkups and also be aware of symptoms such as endless headaches, fatigue and sleepiness, confusion, breathlessness and blurred vision.

"These are common signs, mostly overlooked, hence for some people they realise in the later stage of the disorder," Mntla said.

The community also learnt about HIV/Aids and the importance of always using protection to avoid infecting or contracting the disease.

Five general practitioners, five specialist physicians and more than 10 nurses came to offer their free services.

Pensioner Stephen Meso was delighted about the initiative said a day like this one was just what he needed.

"We never get such treatment in our local clinics and I am so glad to be here as I got all my medical checkups for free," Meso said.

Thenjiwe Radinne, 64, said her excitement made her forget about food.

"I came for the church service with an empty stomach, but because of the happiness I even forgot that I had not had anything to eat," Radinne said.

Reverend Motseoatile Morokane said he was happy with how the day turned out and that people came out in numbers to support the event.

"This annual event was normally for the church members, but this year the YMG decided to share with our surrounding community and I hope next year will be bigger and better." - lerato@sowetan.co.za
