A 15-year-old boy drowned in a ditch in Slangspruit, Imbali, near Pietermaritzburg, while rescuing a child, The Witness reported.

Khethokuhle Dlamini was with a group of friends on Sunday when they spotted the child crying for help in the water-filled ditch, which had been dug for the installation of a sewage pipe.

After saving the child, Dlamini did not emerge from the water.

"This was not the first incident; last year two children drowned just a few metres away from here. That was supposed to be their wake-up call in ensuring children's safety," councillor Thokozani Magwaza told the newspaper.
