The Benoni Magistrate's Court referred a 14-year-old boy accused of killing three of his relatives for psychiatric evaluation.
"The boy was sent to undergo psychiatric evaluation to test his mental fitness and to see if he is fit to stand trial," National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Medupe Simasiku said.
"The evaluation usually takes 30 days, so we will have a follow-up when he next appears in court."
The case was postponed to July 12. Simasiku said the teenager was being kept in a place of safety while they waited for an admittance letter.

His grandmother was injured and admitted to the Far East Rand Hospital. Two other siblings, aged eight and nine, escaped and alerted neighbours. The motive for the attack was not clear.
The youth fled the scene, but was later arrested and charged with murder.
On May 28 police found the suspected murder weapon in a field near an informal settlement after a search by police and local patrollers.
