Gauteng ignores 729 corruption tip-offs

The Gauteng Provincial Government has ignored 729 (47%) out of 1540 corruption tip-offs from the National Anti-Corruption Hotline.

Feedback was received on 811 (53%) cases, and only 578 (38%) of cases were closed.

This information was disclosed by the Public Service Commission at a meeting last week of the Gauteng Legislature's Oversight Committee on the Premier's Office.

Gauteng received the highest number of corruption tip-offs of all the provinces, more than 50% higher than the next highest province, Mpumalanga, which had 1000 cases.

The Gauteng Roads and Transport Department received the highest number of corruption tip-offs, but only closed 193 (38%) out of 505 referred cases. 289 cases (57%) were ignored, with no feedback given.

Responses of other departments were as follows:

Local Government and Housing              -           187 out of 310 cases outstanding

Education                                                      -           192 out of 250 cases outstanding

Health and Social Development               -           139 out of 288 cases outstanding

Community Safety                                       -           68 out of 101 cases outstanding

Finance                                                         -           30 out of 39 cases outstanding

Infrastructure Development                       -           7 out of 11 cases outstanding

Sports, Arts, Culture & Recreation            -           6 out of 7 cases outstanding

Economic Development                             -           4 out of 5 cases outstanding

Office of the Premier                                   -           1 out of 2 cases outstanding

This shows an appalling lack of action on corruption tip-offs in Gauteng.

It is shocking that so many cases are simply ignored, which defeats the whole purpose of an anti-corruption hotline.

Premier Nomvula Mokoyane claims to be fighting corruption, but these figures show that she is failing dismally.
