Raid yielded nothing illegal - ex-cop

RETIRED policeman Piet Griesel yesterday described in court how he and other officers had traced and raided an alleged Welkom gold-dealing syndicate.

The former warrant officer from the Welkom organised crime unit said that on January 9 2010 they received information about a white Toyota Corolla with male occupants travelling between Ventersburg and Virginia.

"At about midnight, we stopped the vehicle. The driver stopped the car and fled on foot. Inside the car we found three men. We searched the car and nothing suspicious was found."

Griesel said they nevertheless arrested the men and confiscated their cellphones. The driver was later identified as Sifelani Msimango, who died in a car accident last year. Msimango and his three siblings are accused of being ring-leaders of the syndicate.

They and their co-accused have pleaded not guilty to more than 100 charges. The trial continues.
