LUXURY vehicles previously used by King Goodwill Zwelithini and his family are set to go under the hammer tomorrow.

But bidders keen to snap up cars with a royal touch are being cautioned that the vehicles are in a poor condition.

The Royal Household Department, which manages Zwelithini's assets, appointed Ballito Plant and Auctioneers to hold a public auction at the Linduzulu Royal Palace in Nongoma to sell off vehicles that are no longer in use by the royals.

The auctioneers won a tender to sell 14 vehicles, some of which had been transporting queens for the past eight years.

Auctioneer Trevor Wormington said some of the vehicles have been idle for some time and are not in a running state. He said it would not have been wise for the royal household to fix the cars.

"Some of the cars had reached 250 000kms. Others have . no brakes," he said.

Four Mercedes-Benz E200 sedans up for sale are among six vehicles that were bought for the queens in 2006 at a cost of R2.3-million after Zwelithini requested that the queens be transported in vehicles that "befit their status".

The royal vehicles are expected to fetch between R80000 and R100000. The current market value of a Mercedes-Benz E200 is about R120000.

Other vehicles up for sale include 4X4s, water tankers and trucks. Vehicles not owned by the royals are also included in the auction.
