Two East London beaches were closed to the public when sewage spilled into the Quinera and Ihlanza rivers at the weekend.

Bonza Bay and Nahoon beaches in East London were closed to the public following the spill, the Dispatch Online reported.

According to Buffalo City spokesman Thandi Matebese, the sewage spill was caused by overloaded storm water drains.

A surfing competition due to take place at one of the beaches had to be moved to Gonubie beach, causing embarrassment for some visitors.

"People come here from all over the country and then we are all embarrassed by a sewage spill," spectator Todd Duston said.
