THE community of Eersterust, near Pretoria, plan to start a trust fund bearing the name of Janine Rooi, who was killed in 2006.
The aim of the fund will be to assist Janine's family and other families in the area who have lost a child in a similar manner, Desiree Fischer, of the Concerned Parents Association of Eersterust, said at the weekend.
The mutilated body of Rooi, who was eight years old at the time, was found on a hill a short distance from her home. She had also been raped.
Her death took its toll on the family, with her mother, Johanna, quitting her job as a nurse and her brother experimenting with drugs.
Even after all these years, the pain of losing a daughter remains with her mother. "I really do not like talking about it because it takes me back to that place. I am still hurting because I lost my daughter whom I loved," a sobbing Johanna Rooi said.
After gathering enough courage, she revealed what happened the day her daughter left the house and was never seen alive again.
"I had been working night shift and was sleeping that day. She asked her father for some money to go to the tuck shop and said she would be back, but she never returned," she said.
A week went by before a resident, who had joined others in searching for Janine, stumbled across her body. "I was so heartbroken that I could not even do my job properly and I quit. I am now working through an agency," Rooi said.
Fischer believes it will take everyone in the area to put a stop to the growing number of children being murdered.
"Hardly a day passes by in Eersterust without a reminder of the brutal past which includes the death of six females - Janine Rooi, Fahbaaino Daniels, Leandra van Greunen, Vanessa Buys, Novina Groom and Danielle Gaysma - who were brutally murdered and in most cases raped." - selebim@sowetan.co.za
