Long wait for operating permits

GAUTENG taxi and bus operators will have to be patient a little longer to get operational licences and operation permits at the department of roads and transport's Johannesburg branch.

The branch, in Diagonal Street in the Johannesburg CBD, has not operated since September last year because its computer system has been offline.

The department moved some of its sections from its original building on the corner of Rissik and Commissioner streets.

Department spokeswoman Octavia Mamabolo had initially said: "The chief directorate responsible for registration and operating licences has relocated to 11 Diagonal Street ... and the offices will be fully functional by no later than end of January 2013."

But Mamabolo now said the office would only be in full swing on March 15.

"The process was delayed because the contractor could not be on site during the December holiday period."

As a result hundreds of buses and taxis in Gauteng are operating without permits.

Mamabolo said all public transport operators had been advised to submit their applications for permits, and operating licences to the offices in Pretoria and Randfontein.

Bara City Taxi Association secretary Thami Buthelezi said many people had now made peace with the fact that they have to drive longer distances to get their permits.

"We have realised this problem will not be fixed soon," she said

"People have to go to Pretoria or Randfontein to fix their permits, otherwise their cars will get impounded." - bambalelep@sowetan.co.za
