A MPUMALANGA mother has praised doctors at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria for successfully separating her conjoined twins.

"I am happy that the operation was a success. After giving birth I was terrified when I realised they were joined," Bongekile Sibuyi, 19, said.

"When the doctors told me they had to do the operation I was scared because I thought one of them was going to die."

The 11-month-old boys, Recall and Recant, were born at Matikwane Hospital in Mpumalanga but were transferred to the Pretoria Hospital for the operation last year.

After months of planning, doctors finally performed the six-hour operation on the boys, who were joined at the abdomen and pelvis and shared multiple organs, on January 17.

Gauteng health MEC Hope Papo said: "The twins were in the hands of A-team surgeons from various clinical specialties. The twins are now in the intensive care unit to minimise chances of complications".

He said some of the complications the doctors are looking out for are wound sepsis and bleeding.

He said the twins would not be going home any time soon as more operations had to be performed on both of them.
