Police nab speeding road users

THE N1 freeway is fast building a bad reputation of being a speedsters' paradise.

Johannesburg Metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said drivers took advantage of the five lanes on the freeway, "particularly at night and during weekends. Sunday early morning is quite problematic".

This after a 55-year-old man was arrested for speeding on his way to pay bail for his cousin who had been arrested for the same offence yesterday.

The man, riding a motorcycle, was allegedly travelling at 164km in a 120km zone.

His cousin, also on a motorbike, was earlier caught doing 166km an hour.

Both men will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court today.

"When the roads are quiet and very wide, there is a perception that people can go much beyond the speed limit.

"This is despite the cameras. Officers also sit on the islands but this is not deterring some motorists," Minnaar said.

He said many bikers take off their number plates so the cameras cannot capture them. "The ticket for a number plate is much cheaper than speeding," he said.

Meanwhile a woman was arrested for driving at 190km an hour on the N1 North near Alexandra early on Saturday morning.

Officers were forced to cut her off her further down the road at the Woodmead offramp after she initially failed to stop.

She will appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court today.
