Teen wounded in shopping mall

Gunman had attempted to rob a jewellery shop

A teenage boy was shot and wounded in a shooting at the Golden Walk mall in Germiston on Tuesday, police said.

Warrant Officer Andre de Jager said the boy, aged 16, was wounded when two shots were fired after a man attempted to rob a jewellery shop at the mall.

He said the man entered Sterns and jumped over the counter, demanding jewellery and money.

A witness saw him and ran to inform the centre’s security guards.

The man ran away empty-handed, and fired two shots.

Paramedics said the boy was treated and stabilised on scene.

“He was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment,” said Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann.
