Skierlik community to honour its dead

SOME good can come out of the Skierlik shootings in which four people lost their lives and eight were wounded when Johan Nel went on a shooting rampage in the North West informal settlement five years ago.

This sentiment was expressed by Kgetleng Rivier local municipality mayor Kim Medupe yesterday.

Nel shot and killed Annah Moiphitli, her three-month-old child Keditlhotse, Tshepo Motshelanoka and Sivuyisile Dlamini and left Alex Ndlovu, Kgomotso Seruthe, Karabo Lottering, Onkarabile Lottering, Margaret Madimabe, Kelebogile Seruthe, Sinah Moiphitli and Pauline Lethoko injured.

The municipality has planned commemorative activities that will take place from January 14 to 20.

"It has not been easy bringing people of different races together since that fateful day.

"When we initially called community meetings, white folk in the area were reluctant to attend.

"However, there was a change and they started coming," Medupe said.

"There was unhappiness in the white community about the services the municipality rendered. We are pleased, though, that there seems to be an understanding of where we are headed. Everyone now seems to be pulling together."

Hector Mputle, of Kgopane Investments - which is organising the events - revealed that the families of those who died would each receive R10,000 and survivors R5,000.
