CONFUSION is reigning in Gauteng, with taxi operators claiming that they have not been told how they will benefit from being exempted from the e-tolling system.

This comes after the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) and the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) placed an advertisement in the press on Monday calling on taxi operators to apply for exemption from paying e-tolls.

Santaco chief executive, Nkululeko Buthelezi, said: "An exemption for public transport operators from the e-tolls is what we have been negotiating for because if taxis have to pay the e-tolls that would mean that the bill would be passed on to the commuters."

Buthelezi called on members to register for the exemption. He said the deadline for registration was December 14.

However, the Greater Johannesburg Taxi Council claimed they had not been informed of the exemption. The Long Distance Taxi Liaison Committee, which covers cross-bo rder operations, also said it had not been informed of the exemption.
