Farm equity scheme is questioned

AGRICULTURE and Fisheries Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson has questioned farm equity share schemes in Western Cape, saying they had failed to eradicate the "colonial slave-master" relationship between farmworkers and farmers.

Joemat-Pettersson said this after Western Cape ANC MPL Khaya Magaxa referred to the equity schemes in the province as a scam, adding that they were skewed to benefit commercial white farmers.

The schemes allowed farmers to sell stakes in their farms to farmworkers who are funded from national funds allocated for land reform projects.

Earlier this year Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Gugile Nkwinti suspended funding for the schemes, redirecting the funds to other land reform projects.

Joemat-Pettersson said while the government had poured money into the projects in the hope of transforming the lives of farmworkers, the reality on the ground was different.
