Cop arrested for trying to help prisoners escape

A Pretoria policewoman has been arrested for allegedly trying to help two alleged blue-light robbers escape from police holding cells

Warrant Officer Anina Beukes, 38, allegedly produced a forged warrant on Monday authorising the release of Dawie Nagel, 35, and Arnold Brits, 34, from the holding cells at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

The two men, from Valhalla, in Centurion, have appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court several times since May 2009, and have been in custody since then.

At the time of their arrest, they were caught with a blue police light on their car, allegedly robbing motorists after tricking them into stopping.

They reportedly got to know Beukes during their court appearances.

According to procedure, the magistrate signed a warrant authorising further detention on Monday, and Nagel and Brits were led to holding cells downstairs, where Beukes was on duty, to wait for transport back to prison.

A second, forged warrant, was handed in at the holding cells, stating that they had been granted bail and authorising their release.   However, someone noticed and the escape was foiled.

The two men appeared in court on Wednesday on new charges of attempted escape.

Beukes appeared in the same court on charges of aiding an escape, defeating the ends of justice, and fraud. She was released on bail of R1,000.
