Another Lonmin worker arrested

Suspected of involvement in the murder of two policemen

A fifth Lonmin mineworker has been arrested in Wonderkop on Thursday, North West police said.

The 35-year-old man was allegedly linked to the murder of two policemen during an unprotected mineworker strike in August, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

An unlicensed pistol was allegedly found in his possession during the arrest.

The two policemen were found hacked to death during the protest in August.

Days later, 34 people were shot dead by police in connection with a strike at Lonmin’s platinum mine in Marikana.

Another four Lonmin miners were arrested earlier this week in connection with killings at the Marikana hostels in October.

The group, aged between 29 and 36, were due to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Ngubane said the group were allegedly implicated in four murders at the hostels during the past three weeks.
