'All De Klerk got was a higher wall'

And other small things - not a major upgrade like Zuma

Former President FW De Klerk has denied receiving benefits similar to those of current President Jacob Zuma.

According to the Sunday Times, the properties of De Klerk did not have work done on them similar to that of Zuma’s Nkandla residence.

De Klerk reportedly told the paper that the State had paid to increase the height of a perimeter wall around his property in Fresnaye, Cape Town.

It also paid for the installation of security cameras and the construction of a room and a toilet for the guards.

And when De Klerk retired, it had erected a security guard hut on the pavement of his Pretoria residence.

On Friday, Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi claimed the upgrades at Zuma’s residents were similar to those of former presidents.

He refused to disclose how much money had been spent on the security and other constructions.

So far, high security fences had been erected, roads in the area had been upgraded and local fire fighting services had been developed for the helipads.

Reports have named the amount for the work to be between R203 million and R238 million.
