Eighteen illegal taverns were closed and their owners arrested in Soweto over the weekend, Gauteng police said on Monday.
Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said liquor and drugs estimated to be worth over R100,000 were confiscated during the raids.
“Some of the illegal taverns were closed after criminal activities such as murder were reported to have been committed.” The drugs were confiscated from taverns in Zola and in Zondi.
The raids were conducted in Moletsane, Jabulani, Moroka, Protea Glen, and Naledi.
Those arrested were expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday and Tuesday to face charges of selling liquor without licences and possession of drugs.
