The motorcycle tour runs from September 21 in Kempton Park on the East Rand, goes through Komatipoort in Mpumalanga and ends in Centurion, Pretoria, on September 29.

One of the riders, Itumeleng Letoaba, of Meadowlands in Soweto, said though cancer was one of the leading causes of death, early detection saved lives.

Letoaba, 34, was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 31. "My left breast was cut off and I'm now left with one breast. I've named it Hazel."

Letoaba said her life with cancer was made easier by her family and her son, who give her strength.

About the tour, Letoaba said: "We will be teaching people about many different types of cancers and how they can look out for symptoms."

Veteran actress and breast cancer survivor Lilian Dube will also be part of the tour.

Dube said: "I am blessed to be alive today. And even though I do not have nipples anymore, I am glad to be alive. At least I get to choose the size of the bra I want to wear every morning".
