Mayors get cars with fridges, cameras and SATNAV

The Democratic Alliance is going to ask the Public Protector to investigate the purchase of two Toyota Prado VX's worth R1.5 million for the eThekwini Metro's mayor and deputy mayor.

Dean Macpherson, the DA's chief whip for the eThekwini region said on Tuesday that the "purchase is a slap in the face of the poorest of the poor in eThekwini who have been denied housing and basic services due to fraud, corruption and limited budgets."

According to Macpherson the two vehicles come fitted with with 4 cameras, a fridge, sunroof and a full satellite navigation system.

eThekwini mayor James Nxumalo has a BMW 7 series while deputy mayor Nomvuzo Shabalala has the use of a BMW 3 series, all paid for by Durban's ratepayers.

"While the DA appreciates that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor should have adequate means of travel and transportation, such luxury and opulence is simply not justifiable in the midst of service delivery protests and rates increases that the city has faced over recent times."

He said the DA would ask the Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela to investigate the purchase in term of the Municipal Finance Management Act to determine whether there was a case for wasteful expenditure against the city.

Comment could not be immediately obtained from the eThekwini Metro.

CheeseBoy. If we all "shut the hell up and let it go" we would still have Apartheid here. As South Africans we need to speak out against wrongdoing!

But the Prado VX comes standard with A camera, SAT/NAV and a sunroof... I think this dean is over exagerating here. Those features are standard, factory fitted. What kind of a Prado that cost R1.5 Mill, i know a Land cruiser Cost nearly that much.

Applauding.... well done guys. We love the bread crumbs are all fighting for down here and we patiently wait for the delivery of services you promised.
Our schools still need books, hospitals need drugs, doctors and nurses and teachers need better salaries, safety in the country is still a nuisance, too many women and children are being raped, the list is endless. We kindly ask that you get off your over stuffed butts and do what you need to do which is service to the public and not your personal lives.

tsotsi: So you're suggesting that because their ridiculously luxurious cars are fine, because they are standard? Surely not? The issue is about how much they spend while doing b*gger all.

What im saying is that there no need for Dean to complain about those features as they come standard, had it been fitted extras, there would have been a problem.... Also its the minestrial handbook that allows them to spend that much, so blame it on the legislature. Theres no story here.

Tsotsi. If that satisfies you, you're welcome. If it's in the handbopok it's OK. The handbook was written by politicians for politicians, and let's just get real here. Our economy is stuffed. Our municipalities are up the creek and are riddled with crookery, yet you suggest that Dean mustn't complain. Strange world you want for us to live in, where politicians ride and the people crawl.
