'Cops demand bribe, frame man and pepper-spray him'

CCTV footage will be used in the case

Two police officers who allegedly assaulted and wrongfully arrested a Bryanston man will be investigated, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate says.

“We have received the docket regarding the case, and will begin our investigation,” IPID spokesman Moses Dlamini said.

The Star reported on Monday that Ashley Cerqueira was pulled over twice by the Sandton police on May 27, purportedly for possession of dagga.

Closed circuit footage from a nearby home reportedly shows that the officers stopped Cerqueira and searched his car after they initially accused him of drunk driving.

Cerqueira then recorded the officers asking him for a bribe on his cellphone.

When he reached his house, the same officers “trapped” him in his driveway and tried to take his phone away.

After he refused, the officers used pepper spray on him.

Footage from his home shows the officers tackling and spraying him.

Even though no drugs were found in Cerqueira’s car, the officers produced a bag of dagga at the police station later and claimed that it was his.

The officers also reportedly tried to take Cerqueira’s mother’s phone after she told them that she was going to record the incident.

If the National Police Commisioner can take bribe, why the poor constable and low-ranking seargent not do it? Money rules the world, like it or not. There is a serious moral decay in our society. Be it at church, schools, homes and elsewhere.

The state institutions are used to advance corruption and person gains. These corrupt cops must be investigated and be imprisoned if found guilty. There is the reason why the justice and police system is in chaos state of affair. My brother in-law is also dealing with corrupt cops seeking bribes even when no crime is committed. South African is becoming a banana republic.

There are so many hyenas in ship skins in the police. But what do we expect from products of a rotten society. When they are employed they are already crooks and the relaxation of the training did not help the situation. With the old training the personality was very different at complition from whence they came in at the beginning. Nowadays they come out the same hence the behavior remains the same or even worse. They even have weekends to themselves which was not the case. Weekend offs were once a month or in two months on condition that the tests were passed. The new breed are the same as security guards, they can shoot, skop and donor.
