AFTER an initial failed bid by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) to have the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) release all information about controversial e-tolls, members of the public could soon finally know who will benefit from the R20-billion project.

Do not mix the ANC government with SANRAL; The middle figure was shown to SANRAL (Private Public entity) and not the ANC. ANC-COSATU committee is/was looking at alternative way of paying SANRAL's bill.Report Abuse

Hey there Robin. Was reading yesterday about the court case. Sanral couldn't (or wouldn't) give details of who was involved, what the actual costs were, what the logistics of collection were, how non-payment issues would be dealt with, why a public company had no published P+L sheets or anything. The whole thing smells like a Something Fishy dumpster during strike season

MommaC: And are we in the least surprised. The whole conduct of the Sanral officials in this has stank to high heaven from Day One of the disputes. "Dodgy" doesn't even come close to the way they tried to bulldoze and rush the thing through under the radar.Report Abuse

I am told that OUTA will be putting details on their web.site soon if anyone would like to contribute to their legal costs in this. They have said that any excess money will be donated to charity and we are all saving about R550 a month so a couple of Rands to them sounds like a good ideaReport Abuse

The GOVERNMENT has spent as much as the cost of 14 RDP houses on one day in court defending the e-tolling system.According to The Star's calculations, between the SA National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral), the Treasury and the Department of Transport, at least R750 000 was spent in one day in the Pretoria High Court.
It costs around R55 000 to build an RDP house.
Adding to the billions of rand taxpayers will land up paying, one way or another, for the upgrade of Gauteng’s freeways, will also come this multimillion-rand legal bill.
E-tolling is costing taxpayers multiple billions of rand. On top of the R20 billion road upgrade bill, there is the R2bn to build the toll system and – according to answers before parliament – Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele said that over the next two years, operating the tolls would cost R2.5bn, with a further R1bn for road maintenance.
Yesterday, Wayne Duvenage, chairman of the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance, revealed that the use of two senior counsel, four days in court and countless hours preparing for the court case to interdict e-tolling had cost the alliance R2m. While this was all the money the alliance had poured into the kitty for the legal case, it is probably small change compared to the massive legal response the government threw at them to try to keep e-tolling on track.
I guess its okay for the government to have money when they need it hey & its also okay for the guavament to over tax the citizens

Now how the hell are we suppose to smell that SCAMRAL wanted to pull a fast one on us as motorist. 4 years ago we never knew what it would cost us to be travelling on these o so expensive roads. Now SCAMRAL can come out and ask the question why it is that Outa is opposing the implimentation of the Scamtoll. Another question would be who is benefiting from this expensive projection? I can assure you that this project is clearly costing the poor more. Take into account companies have kept their annual increases at a minimal, if i say minimal i am talking about increases that match up to inflation. Our salaries can but only last us to get through the month as it is excluding Scamral fees. NO, NO, NO this aint working, get your acts together and go and feest of those who were the master minds behind this project.......Report Abuse

I hope the Big Brass who all agreed to go along with the eToll project receive 0% bonus for this waste of state monies. Why are our tax money used less for infrstructure and more for salaries? These guys have limited skills to be in government. They were in the resistance movement, so they should be deployed to the military... but no, we have a woman as the big cheese in the military, yet another waste of money for a person without fighting skills experience. Affirmative action? More like a buddy system!Report Abuse
