Teacher (50) in the dock over rape of girl (12)

He is alleged to have tied up the 12-year-old, put her on his kitchen table and raped her several times

THE teacher accused of raping a young girl on Monday appeared at the Fourisburg Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Lerato Tshabalala, 50, a teacher at Phaphamang Primary School, made his first appearance yesterday following the alleged incident.

He is alleged to have tied up the 12-year-old, put her on his kitchen table and raped her several times.

Police spokeswoman Sergeant Majang Skalkie said Tshabalala was remanded in custody and the case postponed to May 26.

On Monday afternoon, Tshabalala allegedly called the victim to his house in Mashaeng township, Free State. The victim, together with two friends, were on their way home from library.

After walking into the house, Tshabalala allegedly pounced on the girl and raped her.

The traumatised girl reportedly tried to scream for help but was overpowered by Tshabalala.

After he was done with her, he is said to have asked her not to tell anyone about what happened.

"When she arrived home, she told her sister about what happened. Her sister then told the police," Skalkie said.

Although police could not find the teacher on Monday night, they managed to arrest him the following day.

"He was arrested on Tuesday morning at school. He will remain in custody until his next court appearance," she said.
