Cops' watchdog

WITH R27-million less than its budget requirements and murder and police criminality increasing, the newly established Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has its task cut out for it.

Set to focus on Class 1 offences, it has been tasked to ensure the eradication of wayward cops from South Africa's police service.

With increasing allegations of the operation of alleged hit squads within the SAPS, it will be expected to investigate and successfully solve the numerous cases of murder, rape, assaults, and corruption committed by police across the country every year.

The challenge, according to IPID head Francois Beukman and independent policing researchers, is immense.

"We will learn to work with the money we have, making it count," Beukman said. "We have no other choice. We have to do this and we have to do it right."
