Fighting the flu

THE Department of Health has partnered with the Independent Community Pharmacy Association to raise awareness about flu and its dangers through the Influenza Vaccination Campaign.

According to the World Health Organisation, influenza affects 15% of the global population - about 500000 people die of influenza every year .

In South Africa, the flu season has started. "Last year over one million flu vaccinations were administered in South Africa, and this year we'd like to see these numbers increased significantly," said ICPA chairman Sham Moodley.

High risk groups - pregnant women, people aged over 65 and chronic heart disease, diabetes or lung disease sufferers, especially asthmatics and people living with HIV-Aids or other reduced immune system-related conditions - can get their vaccinations for free from government clinics and hospitals.
