ID theft victim cleared of cell credit

ONE of the country's biggest network providers has cleared an identity theft victim's name from their credit records, thanks to Sowetan.

Moatlhodi Modise, 34, had been receiving statements from MTN claiming that he owed them thousands of rands "in respect of goods and, or services" provided to him.

In November last year, Sowetan published a story about Modise's problems with the company.

The first statement Modise received claimed that he owed MTN R10,472.40. In October last year, the amount had risen to R14,900.75.

Though Modise never lost his identity document, someone used his information to get an account with MTN.

Today Modise is a happy man.

"My name has been cleared. MTN called me after Sowetan published the article, claiming that they were not aware that the account was fraudulent.

"I forwarded all the communication and documentation relating to the matter and they closed the account and sorted my credit with the credit bureau," he said.

"I am happy. Your work has helped me a great deal. Continue this great work to help others," Modise said.

He said he would now be able to get a home loan and buy a house for his small family.

MTN spokeswoman Bridget Bhengu confirmed that the matter had been resolved.
