Schoolgirl stripped of her clothing: Claim

Feb 22, 2012 | Sapa | 36 comments

But school principal denies the allegations

A 10-year-old girl who wore trousers instead of a skirt to a Johannesburg school was allegedly made to strip down to her panties.

The Cosmo City Primary School No 1 pupil was left wearing panties, a school shirt and jersey for the entire day, The Star reported.

She was allegedly instructed to strip because she wore an “incorrect” uniform to school on Tuesday.

According to her mother, who cannot be named to protect the girl’s identity, the Grade Four pupil wore her long, grey trousers to school instead of a school skirt because it was wet from the rain the day before.

The mother told the newspaper that her daughter was forced to go home without her trousers because they had been misplaced.

School principal Kgomotso Khumalo denied the allegations.

All she had done was make the pupil stand under a carport until 10am, she said, adding that the girl was one of 70 pupils who had worn the incorrect uniform.

“I told them ’you are dressed like a circus’. What I usually do is ask them to stand under the carport until break at 10am and then they go back to class. I then give them a letter for their parents.”

However, Khumalo admitted that she had not give any of the pupils letters on Tuesday.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesman Charles Phahlane said no pupil should be humiliated at school. He told the newspaper the department would investigate.

Some people get their rocks of by humiliating others. This is a sign of weakness, and only a person with very low self-esteem would resort to humiliating a 10-year-old in this way. Is this the calibre of teacher we have created? Hmmm. What a pity.

Shredder

Ok, I don't know where the truth is, whether the parent is telling the truth or not I don't know and I don't condone what they did because it is humiliating.

Just one thing that I want to ask. How difficult is it to obey the rules and regulations? If maybe a school set the following rules

1. We want students to have short hair and no weaves for girls.
2. We don't want girls to wear trousers
3. We don't want students to carry cellphones to school (I know at Thomas Mofolo students are not allowed to do so. Thanks my grade 10 niece obeys that and leaves her phone at home all the time)

If the students obey such rules, won't we have less troubles of students being ill-treated because of failing to obey such simple things? We are a nation that is full of pride, arrogance and disrespectful. I remember a while back students at some school in Limpopo said teachers were jealousy of them because they could not afford to pay for their hairstyles. Such arrogance!!

Shredder: I am not happy with what you suggest. "1. We want students to have short hair and no weaves for girls. 2. We don't want girls to wear trousers" This takes me back to my draconian schoolyears in the sixties under a paranoid regime. I got caned virtually every week because my hair almost reached my collar. Girls, who were supposed to wear ONLY navy blue cotton panties, were subjected to pantie inspections. Girls were made to kneel so that the distance from the ground to the skirt hem could be measured and if longer than X they were beaten on the hand with rulers. Cellphones weren't around, but we had transistor radios.... try taking one to school.... You wouldn't sit for days. I'm sorry, this sort of petty rule is just absurd and humiliating. By the way, guess who got to check the panties in our co-ed school..... male teachers. Now tell me that the chauvinism in South Africa is not deeply entrenched. Would they have stripped a boy for wearing incorrect socks? I think not. What does that tell us?
