Principal nabbed for rape

A PRINCIPAL who is also a pastor is being held for allegedly raping his former primary school pupil. The schoolmaster allegedly had sex with the 13-year-old girl on the road between Vuwani and HaMasia villages outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo.

The last sexual intercourse allegedly took place in the back seat of his car on January 16.

According to the girl's aunt, the pupil confessed to the sexual encounters after "a cat-fight with her friend".

The aunt and the principal cannot be named to protect the identity of the girl as she is still a minor.

Limpopo police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said the principal was remanded in custody and his case was postponed to February 28 for a formal bail application.

"He was arrested on Sunday after a case of rape against him was opened the previous day by the victim's parents. This was after doctors at Tshilidzini Hospital had confirmed that the girl had been penetrated," Ramatseba said yesterday.

The aunt said the girl told her that the principal had been having sexual intercourse with her since last year when she was in Grade 7 at his school. The pupil is now doing Grade 8 at another school.

"I only became aware that all was not right after the victim had a cat-fight with her friend over the principal. When I asked them why they were fighting, the friend told me that the victim had accused her of dating the principal while fully knowing that the principal was hers," said the aunt.

She said she then asked the victim if she indeed dated the principal "but she could not talk".

"It was only after we had taken her to the police station that she confided to social workers that she had indeed had sex with the principal. She said she started having intercourse with him from last year."

The principal allegedly gave the girl money after each sex session.

Provincial education MEC Dickson Masemola said having sexual relationships with pupils was a dismissible offence.

"It doesn't matter whether the pupil is over 18 years of age or attends the perpetrator's school or a different school. As long as the person you are dating is a pupil, the teacher is at fault ." he said.

Masemola said the department had dismissed five teachers between 2010 and last year after it was proved that they were having sexual relationships with pupils.

Temba Ndlovu of the SA Council of Educators said they would dispatch a team of inspectors to investigate the allegations.
