Phosa talks of great leaders

ANC Treasurer Matthews Phosa says that every generation naturally brings leaders that fit the demands of that specific generation and circumstances.

"South Africa produced many leaders like Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk, Mozambique produced many like Samora Machel and president (Joaquim) Chissano, and India produced (Mahatma) Ghandhi. These are leaders who understood the moods, demands and aspirations of the generation of their times," he said.

Phosa, who was addressing the Progressive Business Forum at the ANC centenary book launch in Sandton last night, said the leadership values of previous ANC leaders should be copied.

He said it would be important to rediscover the leadership values of ANC leaders who led the party in the last 100 years.

"It will be 20 years in our next elections in 2014 since our democratic elections. Firstly, we must remove corruption in our society. I want to make it clear that freedom and entitlement are two worlds opposed.

"We the leaders of the ANC cannot condone corruption. We must remove the sickening cancer of corruption in our society," he said.

Phosa invited business people to join the ANC in its fight against corruption.

Speaking at the same event, ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said South Africans of all races should re-educate themselves about the history of the country to enable them to chart a way forward.

He said after South Africans celebrated freedom in 1994, they immediately disengaged from helping to shape the future of the country.
