Defence Force called to help Bara hospital

An SA National Defence Force medical team has been called in to help at the Chris Hani-Baragwanath hospital because of a shortage of nurses at the maternity ward

The five defence force theatre nurses were called in earlier this month after frustrated doctors notified the department of health of staff shortages in the maternity ward, The Star newspaper  reported.

However, CEO Johanna More reportedly denied a staff shortage, saying the hospital was merely being proactive in requesting assistance.

An additional 43 midwives had also been hired at the beginning of the year, she said.

When approached by Sapa for comment, the department of health said it was not aware of reports about the shortage of nursing staff. Spokesman Simon Zwane referred all comments to More who could not immediately be reached.
