Toll postponement welcomed

THE postponement of the introduction of electronic tolling on Gauteng roads is a victory for public participation, the SA National Civic Organisation said

"We view this development as a victory to public participation," said spokesman Dumisane Mthalane.

He said Sanco would continue to mobilise and advocate for public consultation and involvement on the issue and all other developmental programmes.

The SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) announced on Friday that e-tolling had been placed on hold following its meeting on Thursday with Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele.

The controversial system was due to have been implemented next month but there was widespread criticism that it would place an unfair burden on Gauteng road users.

"We welcome the commitment by Sanral and the minister to address stakeholders concerns and issues raised in the petitions submitted to the minister," Mthalane said.
