Village under police guard

THE situation in Moime village outside Tzaneen in Limpopo remained tense and under heavy police guard following the killing of two would-be robbers.

Residents went on the rampage on Tuesday and burnt down a shop owned by foreign nationals.

They accused the businessman and three other people of stabbing to death two men who allegedly wanted to rob the man's shop.

The bodies of residents Stephen Kgatla and Paul Maenetja, both 24, were found lying in the street on Tuesday morning.

Four foreigners were initially accused of the murders, but two have since been released.

The remaining two will appear in the Naphuno Magistrate's Court today.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said they were investigating the circumstances that had led to the killing of the men.

Ngoepe said they were still checking with the home affairs department to see whether the foreigners were in the country legally, and from where they originate. - frankm@sowetan.co.za
