Man in court over Vaal weapons stockpile

Cops were called after the suspect attempted to commit suicide following a domestic violence incident

A man accused of possession of several high-calibre firearms and more than 70,000 rounds of ammunition appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Gauteng police said.

Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said Jacobus Alwyn Van Zweel’s case was postponed until Tuesday and was transferred to the Sebokeng Regional Court.

Van Zweel was arrested on Friday night by police responding to a complaint of domestic violence at his home in Vanderbijlpark.

“It is believed that the suspect attempted to commit suicide following a domestic violence incident,” Dlamini said.

He said police took possession of two 9mm pistols and a shotgun, all of which were licensed, plus an AK-47 assault rifle, a R1 rifle, a R5 assault rifle, a 357 Magnum rifle, various AK and R1 magazines, 17 9mm pistol magazines and more than 70,000 rounds of ammunition.
