The BMW 740i was driven by Zuma's bodyguard, who had stopped outside a KFC outlet in Umbilo to buy supper on Monday night when he was held up.
Zuma was apparently at his Durban North home at the time.
The car was later found in Inanda by a security firm.
Two gunmen were being sought.
