PUPILS from Mamaolo Village Walk about 14km a day in pursuit of a better education at the Sedimothole Secondary School in Seleteng, GaMphahlele, in Lebowakgomo.
Last year the Limpopo school had a 87.1% pass rate. Between 2004 and 2006 the school maintained a matric pass rate of between 93% and 100%.
When Sowetan visited the school last week we found a serious shortage of classrooms. Foundations were laid several years ago to add four additional classrooms but building was never done .
Most of the school's windows are broken, which makes winter difficult for both pupils and teachers.
The provincial department of education runs a feeding scheme at the school, which has 11 teachers who teach grades 8 to 12 .
"The education of our pupils is our main priority.
"Despite the many challenges we have resolved to do what we know best," said a teacher, who asked not to be named.
The teachers said it would help if pupils were provided with scholar transport so that they don't arrive at school tired. Another teacher said about 200 pupils' performance was negatively affected by the distances they travelled to and from school.
The education department's Pat Kgomo said they appreciated the good work the school was doing. He said they would look into the issue of providing pupils with transport to motivate them to work even harder.
