A Mossel Bay policeman went on a shooting spree before turning his gun on himself, according to a report on Tuesday.
The Cape Argus reported that Sergeant Annesh Bootram, 36, went to the flat of ex-girlfriend Constable Evelyn Pienaar on Sunday, where a quarrel ensued.
“Shots were fired... several bullets hit Pienaar.
"Her mother, six-year-old daughter as well as a friend sustained bullet wounds,” police spokesman Captain Malcolm Pojie said.
Bootram walked down the flat corridor, turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger.
He died on the scene.
All but Pienaar were discharged from hospital by Monday.
According to the report, Bootram and Pienaar had broken up a month ago.
The sergeant had taken it very badly and was worried about custody of their children, an infant and the young girl who was injured.
His friend John Blou, also a Police and Prison Civil Rights Union official, told the newspaper that working conditions were “dire and stressful” at the Kwanonqaba police station, where Bootram worked.
“Something dramatic must have occurred to have triggered him off.”
An inquest docket and attempted murder charges were being investigated.
