Doctor held on rape charge

Complaint lodged by patient (18)

A LIMPOPO doctor is in trouble following allegations that he raped a patient in his consulting room.

The 46-year-old doctor was arrested on Thursday night after an incident that allegedly happened in NkowaNkowa the same day. He spent the night in the police holding cells and was released on R1,000 bail at the Ritavi Magistrate's Court the following day.

According to police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, an 18-year-old woman from a neighbouring village had gone to consult the doctor when the incident occurred.

He said on arrival the woman went into the consulting room to be treated and the doctor allegedly forced himself on her.

Ngoepe said the case against the doctor was postponed to January 14 next year to allow for further police investigations.

"There are still a lot of things that need to be done to ensure that the case is properly dealt with," Ngoepe said.

He said they would have to communicate with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, which all practising doctors are registered with, to give them details.

"The nature of the victim's illness will also form part of our investigations," he said.

  • The police spokesman also said in an unrelated case, a 22-year-old man from Mokwasele village in Bolobedu, was sentenced in the Tzaneen Regional Court to life in prison and another 17 years for rape, housebreaking and theft.

He said Ngoako Lerato Mokgomola had raped a 33-year-old woman twice on separate days in May last year. Mokgomola also allegedly stabbed the victim several times and stole her property.
