IF you thin "hip" and "library" don't go together, then you have not been to Keleketla Library in downtown Johannesburg.

Keleketla is not a big, cold building filled with books, which most young people are notinterested in.

The brainchild of Rangoato Hlasane and his two friends, Malose Malahlela and Bettina Malcomess, Keleketla is a library with a difference . "We wanted to have a library that produces content as opposed to people consuming content as with other libraries," said Hlasane, a 31-year-old from Limpopo.

Hlasane said Keleketla is a place where young people can express themselves creatively.

"We want to redefine what a library is, so we offer music, dance, creative writing classes and other things that can help create independent thinkers," he said.

Keleketla, a Sepedi word used as a response to "once upon a time", fits in perfectly with the theme of books and of using the arts to tell a story, said Hlasane. The library is largely an after-school programme, where children can learn several disciplines.

The pupils paint posters, make postcards, listen to lectures from influential people and dance. There are funded projects that expose kids to media.--nkosin@sowetan.co.za
